Bitdefender Introduces App Anomaly Detection, a First-of-its-Kind Feature in Mobile Security Industry

Bitdefender’s Mobile Security for Android has introduced a new feature called App Anomaly Detection to safeguard users by analyzing application behavior. This new technology works in tandem with existing security tools to identify any malicious intent of an app, even if it is not yet classified as malware.

One of the key pieces of advice is to avoid using third-party websites to install Android apps, as such sites are often repositories of older versions of applications found in Google Play. Although installing apps from outside Google Play is risky, people may have a legitimate need to do so. In such cases, it is crucial to protect the Android device with a security solution, as malicious software can be found not only outside Google Play, but also within it.

Although Google Play is considered safer than third-party sources, it is not completely risk-free. Google often removes malicious apps from its store only after security researchers have discovered them, which means that many people may have already downloaded them unknowingly.

Even apps installed from unknown sources or official stores may become dangerous through updates or delayed mechanisms. Therefore, App Anomaly Detection examines an application’s behavior in the background, identifying threats that may not be classified as malware yet. If a threat is detected, users receive an immediate notification to uninstall the app, but they can choose to add it to a list of exceptions if they wish.

App Anomaly Detection is a machine learning-based technology that offers an additional layer of protection to Bitdefender’s Mobile Security for Android, which already includes features such as Scam Alert and Chat Protection. The technology also scans files downloaded on devices, further enhancing protection.
